Green Science Day at PS 110

Students at Greenpoint's PS 110 broke attendance records recently when 98.6% of the entire student body turned up to learn about - and have fun with - science.

"It was wonderful to see the students having such a great time while learning,"said Assistant Principal Anna Rocchio. "We hear a lot about test prep and testing, but hands-on learning is so important for a child's education. The students didn't even realize they were learning things like engineering; they had a lot of fun with it."

Even a rainy week that forced the event to be moved from McGolrick Park to indoors at the school could not dampen the students' enthusiasm.

Green Science Day at PS 110 was co-sponsored by ExxonMobil and Broadway Stages, two businesses deeply involved in the Greenpoint community. As a strong supporter of STEM (science, technology, engineer and math) education, ExxonMobil was proud to co-sponsor Green Science Day along with Broadway Stages.

And as the attendance demonstrated, the day clearly was a highlight in the year for both students and faculty and provided students with a positive experience with science education.

Volunteers provided students with activities that allowed them to experience science first-hand. In the school gym, students built their own solar cars which they later took home. In the spirit of sharing, however, one student gave his solar car to Principal Anna Cano Amato, which she has proudly displayed in her office.

In two rooms on the lower level, students planted basil and mixed dried herbs. The students each took home a packet of herbs as well as a basil seedling to care for at home.

Also in attendance were two representatives from the Mayor's office as well as the superintendent and Assemblyman Joe Lentol. During, Science Day Principal Ann Cano and PS 110 Parent Coordinator Tara Atson were presented with an Urban Hero Award for their work with the children and the community.

When asked if she thought the day was a success, Rocchio replied: "Could we have Green Science Day every day?"

If their attendance is any indication, the PS 110 students would say the same.
