U.S. Military Academy at West Point
ExxonMobil has a strong educational focus, supporting a variety of age-appropriate programs from elementary school through higher education to encourage students to pursue math and science-related degrees.
Support for educational programs in the local Greenpoint community is as diverse as that at the corporate level. From providing computers for learning to bringing the classroom to life through hands-on experiences, ExxonMobil works to contribute to the community's educational efforts.
For instance, ExxonMobil regularly provides opportunities for students to learn more about the innovative environmental remediation processes ExxonMobil is utilizing at the Greenpoint site, through site visits.
One example is a collaborative effort with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to bring seven cadets from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to the Greenpoint site for a half day of tours and presentations. The participating cadets were environmental engineering majors in the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at the Academy, where they were learning about Solid and Hazardous Waste Treatment and Remediation processes.
In addition to presentations by NYSDEC, cadets were shown ExxonMobil's full operation, including on-site and off-site recovery wells and water treatment facilities. Following the tour, Colonel Jason Lynch commented, "This was an excellent opportunity for our students to not only see these processes in use, but also to speak with and learn from practitioners."
